Liliana Jackman wandered down the pathway with a content smile playing on her lips. Anytime she was outside, Lily tended to instantly relax and today was no exception. The work of juggling her college class and the duties of the Corporation was stressing her out but when she was surrounded by a such a beautiful enviornment, it seemed rather trivial. As it should because in the end, it didn't really matter. That was Lily's perspective on life and it worked for her.
Using her palms gently held open at her side, Lily used her telekenis to clear the dead leaves from her path. She debated stopping at a passing bench but kept walking, breathing in the fresh air and closing her eyes though she was moving.

Having finished with Taki so quickly, had meant that Nick finished the rest of his work for the Dark Angel just as quickly and meant he could do as he said he would. He would see Liliana.
Having quickly scanned the Corporation, he learned she wasn't there, and borrowing the tracking powers he had picked up on, he located her in the park. Shouldn't have come as a surprise. He knew how much she liked the outdoors.
He might not be an award-winning boyfriend, or the perfect boyfriend. Hell he wasn't a very good boyfriend. Period. He might not do the hand holding, hugs, kisses, sickening lovey looks crap, but he paid attention. That was what he was good at. Having been at the Corporation for so long taught him to pay attention to details, and that was what he did. So where other boyfriends might come behind their girlfriend, wrap their arms around them and whisper loving shit into their ears, they might not be able to spot the little things that separated their girlfriend from other girls. Nick could do that.
Rather then just running to the park or flying over, or using some other power he had picked up on, he grabbed the keys to his car and drove over. The park was only about a five to ten minute drive from the Corporation so he was there in good time.
He got out of his car and used the tracking powers again to locate her. Once he spotted her, he put his hands in his pockets and walked over. She was here. He was here. Why did he have to run around trying to find her?
It only took a few minutes for him to finally find her. She was clearing the path using her powers, and it made him smirk. Watching others use their powers made Nick feel.... well he wasn't quite sure what the right word for it would be, but he enjoyed it. He walked up behind her, and when he was within a few feet he spoke.
I found you. It wasn't a childish exclaimation, or a soft whisper. It was just a statement.

Lily wasn't startled by Nick's sudden entrance. Actually he tended to appear behind her and she was almost used to it by now. Instead, she tucked a light strand of hair behind her ears and turned around to face him.
His blue eyes had always captivated her since the moment she had met him. Her friends who had eventually begged her into showing them a few pictures called him "hot." But to Lily he was just Nick. The person who really did mean the most to her, who noticed the things about her that no one else did, and that knew more about her than she knew about herself. Though it sounded corny, it really who was rather than what he looked like that had stolen her heart.
I knew you would. The space between them was so small it was barely there. To Lily, she didn't have to be literally touching Nick to be close to him in an undeniable way.

Nick felt his bizarre half smile cross his face. Liliana was the only one who could make him do so, and she was the only one (well... Taki had accidentally witnessed it) to see them. He never smiled. He hadn't smiled since he had left home, promising his little sister he would be home soon. Well that hadn't happened. What was the point of this? Oh yah, Nick smirked, he did not smile, except for these strange almost smiles.
Nick liked how Lily didn't start jumping around and squealing like a little girl. It seemed to be the popular thing for teenage girls to do when they see or get snuck up on by a cute guy or their boyfriend. Not Lily. He wouldn't have been annoyed if she had jumped when he came, but she had gotten used to it, and he liked that she was getting used to these odd things about him. Then again, they had been together for 7 months, it had given her lots of time.
He looked her up and down slowly. Earlier he had been distracted by Taki's presence he hadn't had a chance. Liliana looked beautiful. She always did, but he wasn't the kind of guy to say it out loud. Come to think of it, he couldn't remember if there had ever been a time he told her so.
Still standing across from her, he took his left hand out of his pocket and held it out to Lily. He didn't feel the need to say anything quite yet.

Liliana hadn't quite gotten to the point where she could tell what Nick was thinking but she did know that those odd smiles he gave her were for her and her alone. And that alone made her smile brightly back at him.
Today she was wearing a light grey shirt buckled across the front and faded jeans with black flats for shoes. It wasn't like Lily dressed like some of the other girls in the Corporation who went out of their way to be a fashion icon; *cough* Kaycee *cough*. But she did try to look nice for herself and maybe for Nick too. She watched his eyes follow her and blushed delicately.
Lily took her boyfriend's hand in hers and securely wrapped her fingers in between his. She never let her eyes drop from his face as she wondered what he would say next.

Holding his hand out for Liliana was about as far as he went in the way of cute-sy relationship gestures. However, he wouldn't do this if there was others around.
Liliana had figured out for herself that Nick felt awkward about relationships and she didn't demand attention or more hand holding, hugging, whatever in public or in private. She seemed happy with what she got. She didn't complain. She didn't bitch. She just smiled and took it.
But he didn't understand why she wanted to be with him. She got along with everyone and was very likeable. She could be with anyone she wanted, but instead she decided she wanted to be with Nick. He didn't understand.
He rubbed his thumb over the back of her hand. He did this from time to time, so it wasn't new, but it certainly was rare.
They had been standing in non-awkward silence for a while now. Why me? He asked, sure she would understand what he was talking about. What else would he be talking about?

Lily wasn't a fan of awkward silences but innocent ones she didn't mind so much. Though they weren't a cutesy couple, Lily had to admit to herself there was nothing more she would have liked than to just stare into Nick's eyes. And when his thumb caressed her hand gently, her heart skipped a beat.
His question surprised her, but it was fairly easy to answer. Because I don't have to prove myself to you. She repiled simply. Everyone else expects me to be something or someone, I guess. For example, I'm an Archangel so I have to be bad to the bone. Or I am a telekentic so I'm automatically lazy. But not to you, she squeezed his hand lightly. You see past the labels and see... Liliana Jackman. Whoever she is. And you Nick, Lily paused and met his eyes. You are the only person in my life who has ever done that. The only one. Her eyes threatened to tear up at the thought but Lily held them in. She had a habit of controlling her emotions most of the time. Why me? She asked, returning the question back at him.

Nick waited silently and patiently for her to explain, and when she did, he nodded, acknowledging her words. What she said was true. So many people now a days stereotypes people, and although Nick at times was guilty of doing so, with Liliana, he couldn't. She was too different to be grouped with others. She was who she was. Plain and simple.
Then she asked him the same question right back him. He looked down from her face to their entwined hands, then back up to her eyes. Cause I wasn't about to let the best thing that's ever happened to me go fool around with someone else. Maybe not as long an explaination she might have been expecting but every word dripped with sincerity. She was without doubt the only and best thing that had happened to him and he wasn't about to let her go anytime soon.

Lily couldn't help but allow her smile to stretch across her face. Nick hardly ever spoke romantically and she would never have imagined he would say something like that in response to her question.
You're the most important person in my life Lily murmured and then she couldn't help herself. I love you, Nick. She braced herself emotionally, not sure how the Archangel would react.

Ah. There it was. Those three words.
Nick froze as soon as Lily mentioned them. He hadn't heard those words (at least from him or directed to him) in six words, but they scared the shit out of him. He didn't understand why. They were just words after all. But they were powerful and meant so much more then he would ever want to. Yet he could see the sincerity behind Lily's words.
Nick opened his words, and closed it again. Who was he kidding? He would never get them out. Seven months and he felt for her, and cared about her more then he ever could remember caring in his entire life, but he would never be able to say "I love you" to her.
When they got together, they made an agreement that work would always come first, they wouldn't let their relationship jeporidize the Corporation, and that they might not always have time for each other.
Over time Liliana had learned Nick didn't do the romantic things. He didn't hold her. He didn't kiss her. He didn't whisper loving or sweet things to her. He didn't call her cute names like 'baby' and 'honey'. She never let this bother her. She was never disappointed in him.
Now he couldn't bring himself to say those three words. She had never let the other things bother her, but this one might. With this knowledge he still couldn't do it.
He had been standing here looking like a fool for a while, probably with numerous emotions and thoughts flashing through his eyes that she could probably read. Without a word, he brought her hand that was still intertwined with his to his lips and kissed it. She deserved so much better.

Lily watched Nick's reaction closely from the wide eyes of surprise to the flapping mouth to finally the defeat in his eyes as he kissed her hand with the only affection he could muster.
She turned her head and looked at the sun peeking through the trees to distract herself from the silence that followed her words. She hadn't exactly meant to slip it out but it had seemed kind of appropriate. And although she didn't understand why Nick couldn't say something back, she had to sympathize. This wouldn't be the cause of a fight for them. She wouldn't let it happen.
Look, Lily finally said softly, turning her gaze back on him. I'm sorry. That was... I mean, you know it right? I didn't need to say it. I know it's not your thing and I'm ok with that. Really I am, so we're good. We are good. She was blabbering some sort of apology and Lily could only hope Nick would understand what she was trying to say.

Nick lowered their hands and looked at her. Well she wasn't mad at him for his lack of show of committment, but she knew he was. He was relieved. He didn't understand why she was apologizing though. He knew what she was saying, but why the drawn out apology? Shouldn't he be the one to apologize? Although he couldn't recall ever having done so before. It's alright. His half smile crossed his face. Stop talking. You're babbling again.

Lily let out a gentle laugh of relief as her favorite smile crossed her boyfriend's face. Her friends had dubbed it the "Lily smile" but she just knew it as a genuine one. It made her smile and she blushed slightly as he reminded her she was doing that thing again when she couldn't control her excessive talking.
You think you'd be used to me doing that by now, She teased Nick gently, winking one eye at him. So, tell me everything you can about what you have been doing in the past few days! I know, you can't tell me details but I feel like you have disappeared from the Corporation all together! Liliana's voice was light and carefree and she only lowered her eyes from his to glance at their intertwined fingers which made her smile all the more brighter.

He did know her very well. Oh, I know you can't control your rambling, especially when you're flustered or very happy. He let out a brief and soft chuckle when she winked at him.
What had he been doing the past few days? Well you know with the Dark Angel gone off on his mission that its up to me to keep things running smoothly at the Corporation.
That meant constant monitoring of the training sessions, going through numerous paper work, frequent visits to the lab to make sure things were going according to plan down there, and then having to deal with various complaints or issues he was confronted with by Dark Angel's minions. The most recent having been Taki's demand to no longer be a slave.
I made Taki the Dark Angel's official tracker because he demanded respect. He offered. He couldn't talk about the lab work or paper work he was doing, as Dark Angel had made it very clear before he left that it was to remain top secret until 'the time was right.'

It's a curse, Lily agreed about her rambling. He gave a short laugh which Liliana found unusual but wonderful. Nick didn't usually show signs of joy unless he really truly was happy. This was a good sign.
Of course. Lily knew how much the Dark Angel valued her boyfriend and she was extremely proud of him for that. It was a huge responsibility and she of all people knew how seriously Nick took it. You've all kept things smooth while he goes away. I don't know anyone who could do it better. He trusts you; and I'm sure that's a rare thing?
Liliana had only spoken briefly with the DA once so she wasn't too sure what he was like to his Archangels. Only that those who had met him, feared and respected him. She did the later, but had found nothing to fear of him. Yet. But when Nick mentioned Taki, Lily's memory flashed to the board room and the skinny, injured Asian teenager she remembered. Did you? Do you think that was the right decision? He looks like he can barely stand to be honest. Lily was doubtful and curious. She also loved hearing Nick talk about his interests which were mainly work.
