So, let's get the basics out of the way. What's your name?
Calypso Kalei. Some people call me Cali.
Calypso. That's an interesting name.
My parents had a good sense of humor. Hah, no, really, I means, "She who hides the beloved." I had a parasitic twin, so I suppose it was a sort of tribute. Lucky my surname is Kalei, eh?
You had a parasitic twin?
Well I wouldnt have survived with it, so they had it removed when I was an infant.
So, when we you born? Where? How old are you now?
April 14, 1993. Im seventeen. My parents were lucky enough to be allowed to live in Niʻihau. I was born there, but my parents died when their fishing boat sank. So I was sent to live with my Aunt Fiona.
I'm sorry to hear that. Well, what was Niʻihau like?
Well, it is very... primitive, in a lot of ways. Televisions, phones, and radios are strictly forbidden. There are no water lines, or whatever you call them. But there is electricity. Solar pannels, though, no power lines. Homes are free, meat is free, though they do pay for what groceries are brought to the island from Kauaʻi. There are no cars, either. Horses are used for transportation. Actually, now, Im terrified of cars.
Wow, it would be impossible for me to live in Niʻihau. But you said you are terrified of cars? Is there anything else you are afraid of?
Actually, there is. I have Tomophobia. Fear of pregnancy. But I do love children, I must admit.
T-o-m-o-phobia. From having your twin?
You got it, brah.
So, how do you view the world?
Hah, well, funny you should ask that. I view the world much differently than you, and possibly everyone else does. When I was eleven, things began to change for me. The world looked brighter, more beautiful. Colors became richer and more alive. And even without that, everything looked... new. Its like being in a perpetual state of mystification, but Im kind of used to it now. Even so, its still stunning. Then I noticed, when I walked, the Earth beneath my feet, it glowed. Like I was walking in little pools of rainbows, but without the liquid aspect. Now, that happens to everyone. I just dont think anyone but me sees it. And when I touch things, it happens, but just barely. I hardly notice it now. But, water! Water is... insane. You know how oil has that rainbow effect? Well, water always has that when I look at it, but when I touch it, it shimmers, like its full of glitter. I found out that if someone was to drink the water before the shimmering stops, they'll see their hearts greatest desire, or their greatest fear, which ever I decide they'll see, and I see what they see. But if they rub the water in their eyes, they see the world as I see it for a little while. I tend to not tell people these things, though. I suppose it's too late to tell you all of this is off the record.... heh.
That sounds... incredible. I dont think I believe you.
Believe it or dont, whatever. But, I can also grow plants with the water, and then the properties of the water stays in the plant and it can be consumed and have the same effects. It makes them grow startingly quick, though, and theyre always gorgeous. Ive only tried that once, though. But, as an adverse side effect to living in my world, I have no concept of time. I dont even keep a watch with me all the time. For me, one moment feels like it lasts forever, but you cant feel it last forever. Youre just in that moment, and the time that you spend in it is totally irrelevant to life, so it gets ignored. I love it.
Okay, so now Im convinced you're a liar.
Yes, youre right! Im a pathological liar!
Sure you are, Cali. Im not new to that little trick.
Hm, bummer. Ah well. Any more questions?
Do you have a sexual preference? Dont look at me like that! I have to ask that. Why do you think I waited till the end?
Haha, Im straight. Straight. Hm... I suppose that implies that gay people are "crooked"? Flawed? I should retire that phrase. I like boys.
Mmkay, well, I think that will be enough. I hope you know, my editor is going to think you're insane.
*smile* I wouldnt have it any other way.
