Matt was sitting on the stairs which led to the foyer. To anyone else, he would probably look kind of crazy. Really? Who would be sitting on the stairs to an empty foyer alone? Okay, maybe not crazy, just insanely bored and loner-ish.
Matt was neither bored or a loner. He had been at the Institute long enough to forge many friendships, and he was on a mission. Well, not really a mission, just something he was trying out.
Although he usually went to the Danger Room to test out his powers, it wasn't the only place to play around with your gifts.
He stared over at the other staircase and laid down so as to not hurt himself. When he was comfortable, he closed his eyes.
He opened them and was sitting on the other set of stairs. He looked over and saw his body lying motionless, just the way he had left it, literally. Okay, now here was the trick. Usually he could only transfer to one place and then when he was done what he did, he was back in his own body.
He got up and walked up the stairs, just to move around a bit. At the top he closed his eyes. This was usually when he went back into his body, but that was not his destination. Front door. Front door. Front door. He kept repeating to himself over and over again in his head. Front door. We whispered out loud to himself, a little more firmly.
He opened his eyes and was standing at the front door. Unable to help himself, he started doing a little dance. Oh yah. I did it! I'm awesome! Usually he didn't act like this, but hey, he was alone and excited. He thought he deserved it.

Lyra stood at the front gate, closing the taxi door just before it pulled away and sped off. Her blond hair was pulled up in pigtails as she looked up in awe at the size of the mansion, her mouth open slightly. Then she remembered what she was here for and swung her bag up on her shoulder, silver bracelet glittering in the sunlight as she walked up to the gate. She reached to press the call button, but then noticed the gate was already open a crack, something she hadn't noticed before because it had seemed a bit blurry, so she slipped through.
Excited that she would soon get to see Lore again, she sped up to a sprint across the driveway, arriving breathless at the door, eyes wide with excitement and anticipation. She took a moment to catch her breath, then reached up and rang the doorbell, which she almost couldn't reach. She could hear the resonating 'ding dong' from the other side of the door and fought the urge to peek around into the window, and waited, rocking back and forth on her feet, a package of energy.

When the doorbell rang, Matt froze and then a second later, he straightened up, remembering where he was. Right, he was at the Institute and was an X-Man. It was most likely someone looking for a place to stay on the other side. A fellow member would have just walked in, and an enemy would have chosen the most destructive manner to enter.
He took the one step that put him right in front of the door and opened it. At first he was confused there was nobody there. Oh duh! He thought to himself and looked down. Ah, sure enough, a child. Sometimes he hated the fact he was so tall. He had a lot of looking down to do. Not just children, but most females and even some guys too.
A big smile came to his face. Hello there! How can I help you?

When the door finally opened, Lyra's little face spread into a giant smile. One would never guess anything bad had ever happened to her, but she always thought the best of every situation. What kept her smiling about being orphaned? The fact she had found Lore, or, rather, he had found her. The bright side on going blind? She might get a seeing eye dog, and she loved dogs. So, she smiled.
She looked up at the tall man, simply grinning for a moment as she rocked forward from being on her heels, back to standing normally, and her fingers laced behind her back, a childish sort of innocence that was to be expected from someone her age. She nodded as he asked if he could help, but then peeked past him, curious as to what the inside looked like. Most of it was just a bit of a blur due to her poor eyesight, but she instantly saw the blond head of hair and recognized the confidence in the step. She also somehow knew it was Lore just by sensing it, although she wasn't sure how. He just seemed to have the same sort of wonder about him. Forgetting her manners, she shoved past the guy in front of her, arms wrapping around Lore's waist as she practically collided with him, big grin on her face.
Lore!

The fact the door was open and Matt was there didn't really interest Lore, not really. So, he never even glanced over. At least, not until there was a very familiar voice calling his name and a little blond girl hitting his side like a bullet, setting him of balance for a moment. He quickly looked down at her, completely in shock, before he kneelt down in front of her, prying her fingers from his waist before placing his hands on her shoulders, looking rather like a big brother, perhaps even fatherly. Something not often seen from him.
Lyra! What are you doing here, cariad?
It was common to hear him refer to her simply as 'cariad', a welsh word meaning 'dear one'. He tried to look serious, but through his worry a small smile showed through, particularly when she just leaned forward and wrapped her arms around his neck.
I suppose you just missed me then. But you could have at least called first, little one.
He had entirely forgotten about Matt standing there, probably in wonder that the thief who was so foolish and was often seen just throwing away girlfriends --or boyfriends -- within days could be so down to earth at other times, such as this one.

Matt hung back, pretty awkwardly. The girl had appeared to almost speak to him but had been far more interested in Lore, and for good reason. It appeared she knew him.
Lore had been at the Institute for a while, but Matt had never really gotten a chance to know him, mostly cause Lore gave off the impression he wanted to be left alone.
Matt wanted to try and walk away, but he didn't want to catch Lore's attention. He had a feeling the other X-Man wouldn't be too impressed he currently had an audience... no matter how unwilling the audience wanted to be present.
Then he remembered how his body was lying on the staircase. To any passerby, he would probably appear dead. He briefly considered letting himself be drawn back into his body, but if the girl turned around, she might freak out he had disappeared.
So Matt continued to stand there, silently, and shifting his weight from foot to foot.

Lyra quickly dropped her bag and, now knowing Lore wasn't going anywhere, she ran back over to Matt, giving him a hug also, with the enthusiasm of her youth, leaving Lore laughing softly.
Thank you for letting me in!
She said as she pulled back, little grin on her face as she craned her head to look up at him.

Lore smiled as he stood up to walk back over, placing a hand on the child's head, smoothing out her now ruffled hair.
Sorry, Matt. She's a bit of a whirlwind. If I'd known she was coming, I would have saved you the trouble.
He glanced down at the blond girl, knowing he'd have to have a more serious talk with her later, but, then again, he had missed her terribly and was glad she was here anyway. He'd have to call the person he had left her with, too. He had told them specifically to keep a close eye on her, or else it wouldn't count toward the debt they owed him. Not that he was complaining on that front.

Matt stood frozen for a second, a little surprised she hugged him, though after a moment he hugged her back, though a little awkwardly as she barely came up to his waist.
When she thanked him, he laughed. Oh, it was no trouble at all! He said to her, smile still in place on his face. He couldn't help it. He adored little kids.
Then Lore spoke. Quite possibly one of the first things he had ever said to him. Oh no bother. I was... close by. He'd have to wait till they weren't paying attention to go back to his body, unless they ever gave some kind of hint that they'd, or rather she, would be alright with him demonstrating his powers to get back to his proper form.

It wasn't as if Lore hadn't noticed -- He prided himself on his observation skills among various other things. At Matt's momentary hesitation on mentioning where he had been, Lore grinned, and nodded.
Don't worry. She is used to strange things.
He informed him, giving him permission to go ahead and return to his body without actually stating it in detail, letting his hand slid off Lyra's head as she looked up at him.

Lyra looked up at Lore as he spoke, blinking one before she spoke herself, somewhat uncertain. Sh didn't know what told her what Matt could do, but something did. Lore simply called it a 'gift', and Lyra took it for that.
He's two people right now, isn't he?
She had no better way to put it, seeing as she was only eight, but if she had known more, had been a bit older, she would have no doubt been able to name his power directly. She knew what she was talking about, at least, and that was enough for her. Obviously she was right, seeing as Lore nodded.

Matt was amazed that she knew he was in two places. Matt wondered if she too was gifted, and had the ability of sensing others powers.
At Lore's permission, Mat sort of nodded and took a step away from the other two. It was a lot easier when he had space.
He blinked his eyes, and when he opened his eyes, he was lying on the staircase, staring at the ceiling. Although he had laid himself down so he wouldn't have to deal with the pounding headache of htting his head, he still ached.
He gripped the railing to help himself sit up, his back protesting from having the steps digging into it, and the stairs really weren't the best place to rest your head. He'd have to remind himself of that next time he wanted to practice using his powers.
He gave himself a moment for the blood to get flowing again before standing up and coming down the stairs. Hello again. I'm back to being one. He said with a little wave to Lyra and Lore... though mostly Lyra.

Lyra giggled and waved back, back to rocking back and forth on the soles of her feet. Lore let her, of course. It wasn't uncommon for her to be practically bouncing on the spot, so this was rather tame at the moment. Of course, just seconds after his mind had wandered to that thought, she had bolted off, running back outside to play. She was used to playing on her own, of course, but never in so much free space. He sighed, remembering now how much work it had been some days just to keep an eye on her, as he leaned to grab her bag, knowing he should follow her out, and even if he didn't she would come back in and drag him after her.
Be careful, cariad.
He called after her, as he walked towards the door, settling down in the grass just outside the building, not mentioning that Matt was perfectly welcome to join him if he so wished. He often never mentioned such things, expecting people would do as they pleased, no matter what he thought anyway.

Matt knew he should probably leave them be, but he was curious... intrigued. He followed Lore out at an extremely slow pace, trying to organize his thoughts. Afterall, he had just witnessed a completely different side of Lore. One that everyone had seemed convinced did not exsist.
He came up behind the other X-Men. He was still a few feet away, and he leaned against a tree, crossing his arms. So... He said, so as to inform Lore that he was there. Little sister? He guessed.
He wouldn't assume anything until Lore said anything. Though he figured this was the better way to ask instead of stating or asking straight up. Besides, this was probably the longest they had ever been in each other's presence.

He glanced over, and up, at Matt for a moment, smile on his face, showing he didn't mind the fact he'd followed them out, then turned back to keeping an eye on the little girl. His smile got a bit bigger at the mention of 'little sister', although, by blood, the term was entirely incorrect. That was still what he thought of her as.
Not quite. Her parents left her one day, and she wandered out to the streets a few days later. We literally ran into each other. I've been taking care of her since. We're more like family than with any of our actual blood relatives.
He replied, as Lyra collapsed amid a patch of wildflowers, caught in a fit of giggles before she sat up and began weaving together the daises and buttercups, priceless little grin on her face.

Wow... Was all that Matt could think of to say right away. He had to take a minute and digest it. It was rather sad for the poor girl, but at the same time it had seemed to benefit Lore.
The girl seemed to bring out the side of Lore that appeared to not exist. She seems to bring the best out of you. Matt said. This was the most he was sure Lore had said about anything to anyone. It was definitely going to take some getting used to, but at the same time Matt was enjoying it. Finally Lore appeard to be somewhat bonding with another X-Men and in the past few moments, he seemed so much less mysterious and more like someone Matt could trust.

He didn't mention that the little girl also brought out the worst in him, in a way. He stole more than he would have if they had never met, for sure. But, at least he had a reason besides the fact that 'he felt like it', which had always been his excuse to his buddies before.
I suppose she does.
He replied, smiling as she came running over, and slid to a stop before dropping to her knees, grass staining her pants, and placed the crown of yellow flowers on top of Lore's head, grinning all the while before she said what it was all about.
Princes have to have crowns, even thief princes.
Hah, yeah. That, Lore decided, might not go over quite as well with the loyal x-man. But, hey, you never know.
