Well, most people follow rules laid out by the government; Laws. I prefer to follow my own.
He replied to Desirae's question, before very nearly laughing at Sinclair's. Ah, so she was one who recruited others? He wouldn't have expected that. Perhaps it was solely due to the fact she thought so highly of the place she stayed, unlike him. He didn't necessarily love it at the institute. He preferred to live on his own, but, he had very little choice. He simply didn't have the money.
No, nor would she have to. I already stay at the institute, though if they expect me to actually choose a side, they will be horribly disappointed.
He replied, not bothering to glance at Desirae as he mentioned this. She would likely be offended that he stayed there but didn't plan on ever helping if they got in a fight, but he didn't particularly care. He didn't expect her to understand, not that she could without him actually explaining why he did what he did anyway. He wasn't about to do that, so he'd deal with whatever her judgment would be. The institute was big enough that he could avoid her, for the most part, if he wanted to, anyway.

"Mhhm,"Desirae agreed, almost absently. She heard what he said, and she was thinking about it, but she couldn't seem to think about the thoughts his words inspired as well as a reply; so 'mhm' was the best he got. What she didn't understand was, why did he have to have rules? Didn't his mind and the thoughts in his head govern him enough? Why make concrete rules? But she wasn't here to judge him or anyone for that matter, so she kept her thoughts to herself on this matter.
Sinclair didn't have much of an opinion on these 'rules' of Lore's. They could be interesting, but he tended to just go with what came to him, what was natural and what made sense in the situation- all situations. Rules would likely conflict with that, though by the sound of it, Lore's rules sounded more like things to remember. If all girls were to have gloves, it wasn't really a rule governing Lore's behavior, was it? It was just a suggestion of his course of action. Since all girls should have gloves, Lore was bound to give them to the girls as far as Sin saw it- or cared, for that matter.
Desirae responded more to the words not addressed to her than she had the words that were. She said more than Sinclair would, too.
"You have to chose a side! How could you not? It's simple. How could you not know?"Desirae questioned, her voice full of emotion.
"Sounds like you're personally wounded there, spatzi,"Sinclair's voice was soft, almost chuckling as he spoke.
"You stay out of it!"Desirae demanded,"You're nothing but an Archangel sympathizer,"
Sinclair seemed equally amused by Desirae's words directed at him, but he raised his hands in surrender- no use arguing with her. And he was not merely a sympathizer- he was bound to join the side of the Archangels in time. That's all it'd take, time. He wasn't quite ready for that commitment yet, but it was coming.
(Spatzi=Little Sparrow, 'cause she's with Sparrow? Yeah? I laughed, okay? XD)

Hypothesis on Desirae's reaction proven correct, he did nothing but grin, mostly at the fact he'd been entirely right. He listened to their banter for a moment, not bothering to interrupt in order to reply. And then Desirae labeled Sinclair as an Archangel sympathizer and Lore's smile fell instantly to an distrusting frown. Keeping a more watchful eye on the other boy, he finally replied, trying to keep his voice light and cheerful, but not entirely managing.
No, I don't. That's like saying people either fail or get straight A's in school. It just doesn't happen. You'll always find people in the middle, the lone mutants, who either can't choose or aren't interested. I just have the need for the free place to stay, so I stay at Xavier's.
His eyes kept flickering over to Sinclair now, and he was visibly less relaxed. Anything about the Archangels set him on edge. Something about the corporation just didn't feel right, and he was often one to follow gut instinct. Not to mention, the fact that he probably belonged with them in comparison to Xavier's made him recoil even more, simply because it reminded him of what he actually was. Perhaps not a murderer, but he'd stolen more than enough to get a life sentence.

When Lore didn't react with as much emotion as she was feeling, Desirae decided that she should calm herself down. It was easier said than done, but she was going to do her best to accomplish it anyway. Besides, what could she say to that? She didn't agree with him, it was not like that at all. She wasn't saying that he was either going to fail or pass in school, she wasn't categorizing him in the same way. Or, she wouldn't admit she was. Wasn't there a difference? It had never occurred to her that people could be so apathetic with an essential issue. She wasn't going to change his mind even if she had wanted to. Desirae was a very passive person who couldn't hope to be aggressive even if she had needed to.
Sinclair didn't mind such passive people as Lore. He didn't agree with them, he didn't want to be in his shoes, but he didn't argue with the idea or anything. As for Lore's sudden interest on him, the way his eyes didn't seem to stray far from Sin. To prove this theory, he sidestepped casually, playing it off as a need to move because he'd been still so long and didn't like it. That wasn't far from something he would do normally, anyway.
Desirae noticed that Sinclair had moved- he'd taken a step away from her, really. But she didn't bother to turn her head to look at him. A mere glance out of the corner of her eye was all she thought he deserved. She wasn't going to address the move, either.
"But surely you wouldn't turn against Xavier's, would you?"Desirae questioned. Maybe that would make it 'okay' in her mind. . .Maybe. It was worth a shot.

Well, no. That would still be taking a side, would it not?
He replied casually, grinning at how uncomfortable the thought of him not having a side made her. It wasn't necessarily funny, perse, however it was rather amusing. The traces of uncertainty didn't quite disappear, though, and he continued his glances at Sinclair. He didn't try to hide them. There was little point.
It was only then that he realized the day and time. He took a glance at the watch on his wrist. He drew back a step, glad for finally finding an excuse to do so. He waved over at the door to the mall or, rather, the direction it was in, meanwhile taking slow steps backwards toward it. The post office would be closing soon.
I just remembered. I have something I've got to do. I'll... see you around, I suppose.

"Bye!"Sinclair offered cheerfully to Lore, not too alarmed by Lore leaving. Then he turned to Desirae. He didn't kid himself, he knew Lore could certainly hear him even if his voice was a bit quieter than his previous statement, and yet he said it anyway, perhaps wanting Lore to hear.
"I don't think he's my biggest fan, Desi."Sinclair's voice resembled a chuckle. He was grinning, but unwilling to look back at the retreating Lore. His words made Desirae giggle.
"How about we get out of here ourselves before your boyfriend finds us?"Sinclair suggested. Desi nodded - that sounded like a very good idea. She doubted Sinclair was many people's favorite person, and she wasn't going to upset Sparrow for Sinclair when she didn't even like him. So she took his hand as the two of them turned to walk the opposite way from Lore.
Then, after looking around to make sure there weren't any people watching in front of them, Desirae made the two of them disappear from sight to ensure that if Sparrow showed up near them, he wouldn't see them. The moment Sinclair was far enough away from her, she'd surely go searching for Sparrow- spending time with him was the highlight of her days.
